Pool Filter Cleaning & Replacement

Your filter works hard to keep water clean. We make sure it keeps working right.

Clean pool with properly maintained filtration system in San Luis, AZ

Why Your Pool Filter Needs Regular Cleaning

Your pool filter is the workhorse that keeps your water clear. Every day it traps dirt, debris, oils, and microscopic particles. Over time, all that trapped material builds up and clogs the filter. A dirty filter cannot clean your water properly, which means cloudy water, algae growth, and higher chemical costs.

Most pool owners in San Luis do not clean their filters often enough. You should clean cartridge filters every 4 to 6 weeks during swim season. Sand and DE filters need backwashing when the pressure gauge rises 8 to 10 PSI above normal. Ignoring your filter puts stress on your pump and wastes electricity because the system has to work harder to push water through a clogged filter.

Signs Your Filter Needs Cleaning:

  • Water stays cloudy even after adding chemicals
  • Pressure gauge reads higher than normal
  • Water flow from return jets feels weak
  • Pump runs longer but water does not clear up
  • Filter cartridge looks brown or stained
  • More than 6 weeks since last cleaning

Filter Types and How We Clean Each One

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are the most common type we service in San Luis. We remove the cartridge, spray it down with high-pressure water, and soak it in filter cleaner to dissolve oils and minerals. This deep cleaning restores proper water flow. Cartridges typically last 2 to 3 years before needing replacement. We check for tears, weak pleats, or permanent staining that means it is time for a new one.

Sand Filters

Sand filters need regular backwashing to flush trapped debris. We backwash until the water runs clear, then rinse the system. Every 5 to 7 years, the sand itself needs replacement because it loses its sharp edges that catch particles. We also check the multiport valve and pressure gauge during service to make sure everything works correctly.

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

DE filters provide the finest filtration but require the most maintenance. We backwash the system, disassemble the filter tank, and clean the grids by hand. Then we add fresh DE powder through the skimmer. DE filters catch particles down to 3 microns making them great for crystal clear water. The grids need replacement every 7 to 10 years depending on use and care.

When Cleaning Is Not Enough

Sometimes your filter is beyond cleaning. Cartridges with rips, crushed pleats, or permanent discoloration need replacement. Sand that has been in use for more than 7 years stops filtering effectively. DE grids that crack or tear cannot hold the DE powder properly. We always inspect your filter thoroughly and tell you honestly whether cleaning will fix it or if you need a new one.

Replacing a filter costs more upfront but saves money long-term. A failing filter forces your pump to work harder, uses more electricity, and still delivers poor water quality. You end up spending more on chemicals trying to compensate for inadequate filtration. We help you choose the right replacement filter for your pool size and budget. Our maintenance plans include regular filter checks so you never get surprised by sudden failure.

Proper filter maintenance ties directly to overall water quality. If you struggle with recurring cloudiness or algae, your filter might be the problem. We often combine filter service with our deep cleaning service for customers who want a complete pool refresh. For pools with severe algae issues, check out our green pool treatment which includes thorough filter cleaning as part of the recovery process.
